An Amazing Journey is about to start...
The route chosen by David is the same one made famous by Christopher Columbus who created history when he sailed across the atlantic in 1492 - leaving the Canary Islands on the 9th September, finally arriving at San Salvador an island in the Bahamas on the 12th October some 33 days later. Although David will be departing from the same port as Columbus he has chosen English Harbour, Antigua for his first port of call after the 3,000 mile row.

Though Christopher Columbus never set foot in what became the United States, Columbus is often viewed as a hero because of his pivotal role in U.S. history. He has had a cultural significance beyond his actual achievements and actions as an individual, becoming a symbol and figure of legend. Numerous stories about Columbus have cast him as an archetypal figure for both good and for evil.
While other discoverers and immigrants had come to the new world of the Americas before Columbus and it had already been "discovered" many times, Columbus's impact and significance in history has more to do with his time and its effects. His journey came when technical developments in sailing techniques and communication made it possible to report his voyages easily throughout Western Europe. In this way Europe was reacquainted with the Americas, and this was followed by many more voyages seeking wealth and expansion.
A mark will once again be left in history when David completes the crossing hopefully in a "record time" for the small boat - 'Positive Outcomes' - Follow David's project Columbus Discovery II - named in honour of Christopher Columbus.
